About Me

Company Description

From an early age I was interested in British Folk Art. In my teens I regularly visited Stow on the Wold Horse Fair and loved seeing the painted waggons, and the brightl fairground rides in the centre of the town. In the late '70s I knew people who were still working on the canals around Birmingham. It was there that Ian Sly, a working boatman, showed me the basics of woodgraining and Roses and castles ,, the traditional folk art of the canals.
While I was still at school, I started to recognise and love a particular painters work that I saw at fairs, Fred Fowle. Luckily, when I was at Bath Academy of Art, one of my college tutors, Mike McInnery had worked with Fred years before , and had an address for him. Visiting the wonderful fairground artists, Fred Fowle and Billy Hall, was a turning point for me and I still spend some of my year working on restorations of old rides.
After college I spent half my time in a craft workshop at Sudeley Castle and the other half at Brillscote Farm in Lea, Wiltshire, home of Relic Antiques, learning more restoration techniques, from Grierson Gower.
My first proper fairground job was painting a set of galloper horses with John Pockett, a master painter.
After various workshops, I travelled with Horse and waggon and then finally settled back in Gloucestershire.
I have now been self employed for over 30 years spending the last fourteen here in the last everyone can now find me.....but it can still be easier to send me a letter due to the poor mobile reception at my workshop!

The picture to the left was taken by Sussie Bell for the 'Landlove' magazine. I'm stiny workshop. Of course it is far too small to paint gallopers and waggons. Most of my work is done on site but I love to keep this bothy as a hideaway. In the winter, once the fire is lit it is a tranquil space where I can draw, paint and work on my pottery.

The Bothy Shop

I am starting to have an online shop called 'The Bothy Shop' where I will be selling both my own artwork and others....with a bit of vintage and painted furniture.
